Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to instruction that aims to remove barriers by providing a variety of opportunities for all learners. UDL’s overarching guidelines are to provide multiple means of representation, action and expression, and engagement.
The UDL component I will add to the existing instruction is a printable companion brochure (“Reading River Journal”). Students will print the document at the unit’s start and use the brochure throughout the module to review strategies, record assessment results, and respond to prompts. The inclusion of the brochure adds multiple principles of (UDL) to the learning module.
First, it provides another means of representation. Students will use a physical component to complement the concepts they are experiencing on-screen. The brochure will highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. It will help guide students’ comprehension and generalization both during and after completion of the module.
Next, the brochure provides an additional means of action and expression. It allows students to participate in executive functions such as goal-setting, managing information, and monitoring their own progress.
Finally, the brochure provides an additional means of engagement by encouraging self-regulation, authenticity, relevance, and reflection. It will provide students with a physical “map” that aids in highlighting goals and objectives.
